Sandy's Poppa Need some help with my 7 yr old Cockerspaniel Terrier mix w/ behavioral problems.

My family and I have had (Sandy) for about 3 years and she has become a member of our family. She is 7 years old and was adopted from the Humane Society. At first we didn't think it to be much of a problem when she would continually bark and scratch the wall and doors to bits whenever we would leave the house. It appears that her behavior has become worst with our recent move. Our neighbor isn’t liking the constant barking and suggest we find some help for her. We are currently looking for sugge… Continue

Susan Martin New to Sirius

We recently added a new member to our family, a 1-year-old amstaff/french bulldog who was abandoned. She has some issues and I would like to bring her to classes to help me to help her to become a great dog, and also for socialization with other dogs and people. Are there any such classes for us? Lehualani Concepcion Hawaii Kai Dog Walk

Aloha! Is anyone going to the Hawaii Kai Dog Walk in June? I was wondering if anyone went last year and what the walk for the "long course" is like. The website doesn't say anything but the distance. I wanted to know if much of it is on the sidewalk/pavement or if it's mostly on grass...if it's on cement, I'll have to bring Hilu's shoes so her paws don't burn! Continue

Wendy Mah National Dog Bite Prevention Week

May 17-23 is National Dog Bite Prevention Week. It is a serious problem when a dog bites people or other dogs. Early training is the key to prevention. However, if you have a dog that is already showing signs of aggression now is the time to work on it. Aggression is not "a phase" the dog is going through and does not get better if "they would just grow out of it". Let this week recognizing National Dog Bite Prevention be your motivator to take positive steps to help your dog have a happier n… Continue

Chuck Painter On Border Coliies

I've had two Borders in my life. One, Maxi, who taught me most everything I know and was my best friend for 14 years. And a relatively new puppy, Mikki, who just had her first birthday. The memory dims a bit over time, and I had forgotten just what a challenge a Border Collie puppy can be. They say that Borders are the one of the smartest breeds. Just a piece of advice. Borders really are smart, but it's a double-edged sword. They're smart enough to open your gate. They're curious about pipe… Continue

Chuck Painter Getting Sirius

Fiftten years ago, I had acquired a new Border Collie puppy named Maxi (the maximum dog I could afford). I knew nothing at all about raising a dog, and a Border was more than a little challenge. I took her to the community classes (what I call the choke and jerk classes), but Max would just sit down in the middle of training and refuse to move. We were asked to move to the side. Over in the back of the compound, the Border Collie club was taking dogs through agility training, so I ambled over… Continue
